2017 Ceremonies

The Public Health Convocation Ceremony will be held on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at the Royal Farms Arena at 3:00PM

The Convocation speaker will be Dr. Seth Berkley, epidemiologist and the CEO of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.  His TED talks can be viewed at https://www.ted.com/speakers/seth_berkley

The University-wide Commencement Ceremony will be held on Wednesday, May 24 at the Royal Farms Arena at 1:30PM

Regalia

All graduates participating in Convocation and/or Commencement are required to wear the appropriate cap, gown and hood for their degree.

Regalia pick-up - Students who did not pick up regalia as scheduled on April 17th and 18th must come to Suite E1002 to pick up by April 28. E1002 is open Monday - Friday from 8AM -4PM.

Students who may need to provide a certified letter to request that immediate family residing outside of the U.S. attend the ceremonies, should complete the form found here.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

I plan on attending Convocation, but have not ordered regalia. Can I still order it?

No.  The deadline to order regalia was Fri., May 5.

I opened my regalia and appear to have the wrong tassel/ wrong hood. What should I do?

Any adjustments can be made the day of Convocation.  Please visit the regalia representative on the lower level upon your arrival at the Royal Farms Arena.

What should I bring to Convocation?

Expected graduates should arrive at the Royal Farms Arena with their regalia.  Valuables should be given to friends and family to be held until the end of the ceremony. THERE IS NO SECURE AREA TO KEEP VALUABLES.  Please note the venue does not allow backpacks, selfie sticks, etc.  A complete list of Prohibited Items is available on the Royal Farms arena website at http://www.royalfarmsarena.com/arena-info/a-z-guide.

Are tickets required for Convocation?

No.  This is not a ticketed event.  Expected graduates may invite as many friends and family as they wish.

How long is the ceremony?

We expect the ceremony to run between 3 and 3.5 hours.

What time will the doors open?

Doors open at 1:30pm.

What time do I need to arrive at the Arena?

Graduates should plan to arrive between 1:30pm and 2:15pm.

 

Where do I go when I arrive?

Upon arrival graduates should proceed down the ramps from the main lobby to the lower-level.  Signs will direct graduates to the appropriate check-in/ line-up areas.

 

Where should I tell my friends and family to sit so they will see me?

The approximate seating chart is available at http://www.jhsph.edu/student-life/graduation/ApproxStudent%20Seating2017.pdf.  Doctoral and MPH graduates will be seated on the East side of the Arena.  All other Masters graduates will be seated on the West side of the Arena.  Guests can sit in the seats on the corresponding side of the Arena.

 

Can children attend the ceremony?

Yes.  Children can sit in the guest seating areas and must be supervised by an adult at all times.  Children are not permitted in the line-up areas, nor are they allowed to march with graduates

Is the tassel worn on the left side or the right side?

Masters graduates should wear the tassel to the right. Doctoral tassels are fixed to the left.

 

What about photos?

Commencement Photos, Inc., (978-851-5924), will be taking photos of each graduate as they walk across the stage.  Information about Commencement Photos can be found at http://www.commencementphotos.com/

Will I receive my actual diploma at Convocation?

Spring Masters candidates receive the actual diploma.  All Doctoral candidates are hooded at the Convocation ceremony. Spring Doctoral graduates will receive their diplomas at the University-wide Commencement ceremony on Wed., May 24, if they attend.  If they do not attend, diplomas will be available for pick up in E-1002 on Thurs., May 25 and Fri., May 26 between the hours of 8am and 4pm on both days. Diploma mailings will begin on May 30.

Summer and Fall graduates have already received their diplomas and will be given a Declaration of Health Rights as they walk across the stage. 

 

What should I do with my regalia after Convocation?

Doctoral graduates who are not planning to attend the University-wide Commencement ceremony on Wed., May 24 should return regalia to the station on the lower level. Masters graduates may keep their regalia or return it to be recycled.

I am no longer able to attend Convocation. What should I do?

Please e-mail jhsph_graduation@jhu.edu as soon as possible.

 

When will my degree be posted to my transcript?

We expect degrees for May 2017 graduates to be posted to transcripts before the first week in June.
