Welch Center and GIM faculty member Mary Margaret (Mimi) Huizinga, MD, MPH, is the first-named author of an article published in the November issue of the Journal of General Internal Medicine that has attracted the attention of the general press. Dr. Huizinga’s article, “Physician Respect for Patients with Obesity,” reports research suggesting that doctors show less respect for obese patients than for those with normal BMI. Negative attitudes on the part of physicians may then cause obese patients to avoid doctor visits or preventive screenings.
The study’s other authors include Welch Center and GIM faculty members Dr. Lisa Cooper, Dr. Jeanne Clark and Dr. Mary Catherine Beach. Dr. Sara Bleich of the Department of Health Policy and Management at the JHU Bloomberg School of Public Health was also among the study’s authors. The results of the study have been reported in a variety of online resources, from traditional journalism sources, to online news aggregators here and abroad, to weight-loss help sites.
