What Does the JHU Humphrey Fellowship in Drug Abuse and Public Health Include?

The 10-month, midcareer non-degree Fellowship provides:

• Mentored academic study at a preeminent U.S. university.
• A minimum 6-week research affiliation and professional experience with a NIDA-supported scientist or a public health professional organization whose mission is relevant to the public health focus area in which the fellow is studying and working.
• Additional professional development activities that help you establish personal relationships with NIDA grantees and NIDA officials, as well as local public health agencies, who are interested in collaborating with you after you return home.
• Tuition, a stipend for books and living expenses, round-trip travel, health insurance, an allowance to support professional development activities, and participation in the national Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Seminar in Washington, DC.
  

What Does NIDA Do?

The National Institute on Drug Abuse is part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), a component of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.  NIDA:

• Supports research on the biomedical and behavioral causes, consequences, prevention, and treatment of drug abuse and addiction.
• Disseminates research findings to significantly improve drug abuse and addiction research, practice, and policy.
• Provides international and domestic research training, career development, and public education efforts.

Who Is Eligible?

The Requirements for the JHU Humphrey Fellowship in Drug Abuse and Public Health Applicant are:

• A midcareer position in a university, nongovernmental organization, government ministry, health care profession, or other drug abuse-related occupation where science-based evidence contributes to practice, policy, or program development.
• An earned doctoral degree in medicine, public health, or biomedical, behavioral, or social science. (Candidates with a master's degree and substantial professional or research experience also will be considered.)
• A demonstrated commitment to leadership and public service.
• Proficiency in written and spoken English.
• Citizenship in a country eligible for the Hubert H. Humphrey Drug Abuse Research Fellowship, with residency and employment in that country for the past 5 years.

How Should I Apply?

The U.S. Department of State is the primary sponsor of the Hubert H. Humphrey program, awarding fellowships to candidates in 12 subject areas.  The U.S. Embassy or Fulbright Commission in each country establishes priorities among those 12 subject areas and conducts preliminary evaluations of applicants.  The NIDA Humphrey Drug Abuse Research Fellowship is a component of the larger State Department program, and you must contact the U.S. Embassy or Fulbright Commission in your home country to apply.
