People gain weight for different reasons. The individualized program at Johns Hopkins Weight Management Center takes into account the differences between individuals. Each weight management care plan starts with careful, individual assessment performed by the expert members of our multidisciplinary team.
You will develop a personal relationship with the physician, registered dietitian, behavior therapist, and exercise physiologist, as you learn necessary skills for long term weight loss success in the context of your own personal lifestyle. Key ingredients include healthy eating, regular exercise, a positive mental outlook, stress management, and effective relapse management skills.
We utilize an evidence-based approach to encourage immediate weight loss. We also focus on building a strong behavioral foundation for long-term weight control. We are here to help you learn to control your weight for the rest of your life. We will focus on individualizing proven strategies, and personalizing your care to help you achieve your goals.

Medical Supervision and Metabolic Testing: The physician medically monitors your current and ongoing medical needs, supervises our program, and follows each patient individually. Only by checking your physical responses to the program can our weight loss team make the metabolic, physiological, nutritional, adjustments needed to maintain your good health and allow you to lose weight safely and effectively. Our team of professionals will provide the following medical procedures:
Medical assessment and supervision of weight loss
Periodic blood tests: cholesterol, triglycerides and other health indicators
Weekly weight check and nutrition education
Measurement of body composition and resting metabolic rate
Fitness testing, and individualized exercise programs
Individualized and/or group behavior change sessions
Long term weight maintenance and relapse prevention programs
Referral to other professionals as indicated
Nutritious Meal Plans and Nutritional Food Products
Our weight loss protocol is nutritionally formulated to help you adhere to the program’s prescribed calorie levels. The great tasting meal replacement products help ensure proper nutrient intake, reduce your hunger, and allow you to easily comply with the program for quicker weight loss. We will also teach you portion control and meal planning principles for long-term success.
Lifestyle change is a cornerstone of long-term weight management success and prevention of weight regain. In this program, you will learn to make wiser food choices, increase your exercise activity, manage stress and improve your sleep habits, thereby helping to create long-term success.
Long Term Maintenance Program
While patients are often successful in losing weight, many find that keeping it off is far more challenging. We offer a strong 12-month maintenance program that will help you develop your own personal method of self-accountability. Topics build on principles introduced during weight loss and incorporate core behaviors identified by the National Weight Control Registry and other sources. Minimum commitment is 12 months or until each patient is confident they can maintain their new weight on their own.
Success Begins With You!
This protocol is well supported by research to produce safe, effective, rapid weight loss. However, data also shows a clear correlation between number of office visits and total pounds lost, which indicates that patient compliance to the protocol is vital to initial and long-term weight management. After the Orientation Visit, if you feel this is the right program for you, your Initial Assessment Visits can be scheduled with each clinician on the multidisciplinary team. During these visits, we will work together to determine the best treatment plan for you.
