In working to both enhance public health system competency, capacity and public health workers’ willingness to effectively respond to emergencies, the Johns Hopkins Public Health Preparedness Programs supports both training and research efforts in this area. The Johns Hopkins Center for Public Health Preparedness (JH~CPHP) has developed a variety of training and academic opportunities that include: Face-to-face preparedness symposia held at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and throughout the region; The Road Map to Preparedness designed to address the specialized needs and issues faced by state and local health departments; and a preparedness certificate for degree- and non-degree-seeking students. Activities offered through the entire Center for Public Health Preparedness network can be found at thePublic Health Preparedness Resource Center maintained by the Association of Schools of Public Health. This free online catalog provides learning opportunities with courses and training activities, tools, and educational programs. The Johns Hopkins Preparedness and Emergency Response Research Center (JH~PERRC) is uniquely focused on mental and behavioral aspects of public health systems research in preparedness and emergency response. The center’s goals are to build capacity, competency and coordination of public health systems to prepare for, respond to, and recover from the adverse mental and behavioral health effects of emergencies. A brief overview of the topics covered by the 4 JH~PERRC research projects are listed below. Additional details can be found by clicking each individual project link. The JHPERRC projects focus primarily on the “public mental health system” as it relates to preparedness through 4 critical components of a public health system- public health infrastructure, communities, media and the legal and ethical environment.
