Rakai Project
In the 1980s, the Rakai District was the epicenter of Uganda’s emerging “slim disease” epidemic, the deadly disease that later became known as HIV/AIDS. The emergence of HIV led to the formation of the Rakai Health Sciences Program, a state-of-the-art, multidisciplinary research facility in rural Uganda. Today, researchers are conducting cutting-edge science into new ways to prevent HIV and other diseases. There is nothing else like it in sub-Saharan Africa.
