About Us

Mission

The mission of the Institute for Global Tobacco Control is to prevent death and disease from tobacco use around the world through research, education and policy development. We do this by:

  • leading and collaborating on research projects that support the development of tobacco control policy and interventions
  • serving as an educational resource through the collection and dissemination of material
  • developing and offering educational programs
  • synthesizing evidence in support of stronger tobacco control initiatives worldwide

History

The Institute for Global Tobacco Control (IGTC) was established in 1998 in the Department of Epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School for Public Health. The Institute is a key international research and resource center for tobacco control. From its base in survey research, the Institute has a broad range of research projects and strong programs in education and training. It is leading the development of new strategies to evaluate tobacco control interventions and actively supports the development of national tobacco control plans and policy development. In 2004, the Institute was named a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre on Tobacco Control Surveillance and Evaluation.

Currently, the IGTC has ongoing research projects in approximately 40 countries around the world.
