Summary

In collaboration with University of Swaziland (UNISWA) administrative and student leadership this work utilizes data and findings from research conducted by Mazibuko and Lackey (M/L) addressing UNISWA student perspectives on available University HIVAIDS information and activities to inform and develop student focused, responsive prevention programming and action.

The project continues ongoing work, since 2002, with the University and its students, now further addressing HIV prevention. This work promotes utilization of research to improve program effectiveness, including selecting and interpreting relevant results from existing research, and working with local organizations to effectively use data. Surveys and focus groups conducted with UNISWA Faculty of Education students by M/L reinforce frequently articulated need to further respond to HIVAIDS across the University community. The cross-disciplinary (education, public health, sociology) research corroborates need, among others, to facilitate access to information, to create and implement programs and activities to build knowledge and skills, and to tailor plans and activities to local need and context.

This project demonstrates and models application of research, including student participation in interpretation and use of findings, to guide development of seminar and training workshop content and materials, and student-focused campus activities addressing prevention. It engages with students to promote leadership for HIVAIDS action and simultaneously enhance participant understanding of HIV prevention.
