Description of Cohort

    Four communities: Forsyth County, North Carolina; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Sacramento County, California; Washington County, Maryland.

Examination Procedures

    Comprehensive cardiovascular, behavioral, and functioning examination every three years; brief examination every year from 1989 to 2000. Follow-up for hospitalizations and deaths after 2000.

    • Grip strength, walking time, height, weight, circumference
    • Electrocardiography

    • Chemistries
    • Lipids
    • Hemostasis factors
    • Glucose tolerance
