The Bloomberg School takes pride in its diverse student population and welcomes the opportunity to work with students from around the world.
This page is dedicated to our international applicants, as well as those who have studied at international institutions. Here applicants may find details regarding:
- English language proficiency tests
- Credentials evaluation requirement for international academic records
(including study abroad) *PLEASE NOTE POLICY CHANGE*
- Student visas
Applicants from countries where English is not the official language must submit scores of an English language proficiency test.
To fulfill this requirement, the Bloomberg School will accept scores from either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
ETS institution code for MPH applicants applying through SOPHAS is 5688
ETS institution code for all other applicants is 5352
|Minimum Scores |
|IELTS||All applicants submit IELTS scores directly to the Bloomberg School's Admission Services. A copy of your score report may be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org.||Minimum Score - 7|
Admissions will waive this requirement only if:
- a student has completed a four-year degree from an accredited U.S. institution
- a student is from a country listed on our quick reference list
Please note: if you're required to take an English language proficiency test, make sure you do so well before the application deadline. These test scores, as with all application requirements, are due BY the application deadline.
Regardless of citizenship, language or home country, if you attended a post-secondary institution outside of the United States, you must have your academic records evaluated by a U.S.-based external credentials evaluation agency.
NEW: The only exception to this requirement is for post-secondary institutions in English Canada. If you received a degree from a college or university in English-speaking Canada, please have your institution submit transcripts directly to the office processing your application (SOPHAS for MPH applicants and Admissions Services for everyone else).
Applicants to the Schoolwide MPH with international academic records should follow the SOPHAS instructions for obtaining a credentials evaluation through WES.
All other applicants should:
- Choose an agency from the list below that will include a copy of your transcript (or marks sheet) in its credentialing report.
- Request a course-by-course evaluation.
- List the Bloomberg School as the recipient of the report.
The Bloomberg School does not endorse credential evaluation agencies. However, the following agencies meet the general requirements and will submit copies of transcripts (and mark sheets) with their reports.

If you are a domestic student and your courses, grades and credits from your study abroad program appear on your home school's official transcript, you do not need to submit a transcript from your study abroad institution.
If your home school's transcript does not provide this information and the courses you took were limited to two semesters, you will need to request an official transcript from your study abroad institution. This transcript need not be evaluated by a credentials agency.
If you took courses for more than one year (two semesters) abroad and the information does not appear on your home school's transcript, then we will require an evaluated transcript from your study abroad institution.
All admitted international students who plan to attend the Bloomberg School are required to attend in F-1 or J-1 status (unless you are already in possession of an immigration status in which studying is permissible). This process will not begin until you are formally admitted.
The Office of International Services will contact admitted international students who have completed their enrollment form in the spring. Additional instructions will be provided then.
