Part-time MPH-DrPH Program in Health Care Management and Leadership for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi

The School of Public Health offers a Master of Public Health -- Doctor of Public Health (MPH-DrPH) degree program to prepare individuals for leadership positions in health care organizations within the public and private health sectors of Abu Dhabi and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).  This program is sponsored by the Health Authority of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.  The MPH portion of the program provides a general knowledge of public health issues with a concentration in leadership and management course work.  The focus of the DrPH Program in Health Care Management and Leadership is on measuring, monitoring and improving the clinical and financial performance of health services organizations, as well as on training to lead organizational change efforts.

The program consists of formal coursework and an MPH capstone project, as well as a DrPH qualifying exam, oral exams and a dissertation project that addresses challenges of the student's work setting.  The student cohort will travel to Johns Hopkins for one-week time periods twice per year to attend courses offered in Summer and Winter Institutes.  Other courses will be offered online, through videoconferencing, and by Johns Hopkins faculty onsite in Abu Dhabi.  Prospective students must meet eligibility criteria, JHSPH admission requirements, and 2-step admissions process for the MPH and DrPH degrees.  More detailed information can be found in the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ).

MPH/JD
The School of Public Health, in cooperation with the Georgetown University Law Center, offers a combined degree program in law and public health. The program trains students in the overlapping fields of law, public health, and ethics.  Students must apply to and be accepted to the full-time program at Georgetown University Law Center for the Juris Doctor degree and the full-time Master of Public Health degree program at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.  Students in the program will earn a Juris Doctor degree from Georgetown and a Master of Public Health degree from Johns Hopkins.  The combined degree program takes a total of four years, including one summer.  Students will normally complete one year of the JD degree program at Georgetown, and then spend 11 months (starting in July) completing the MPH program requirements, returning to Georgetown to complete the last two years of the JD program. The MPH degree is awarded upon completion of the JD degree.

For further information on the program, contact Professor Stephen Teret or Mr. Jon Vernick, 624 N. Broadway, Baltimore, MD 21205; (410) 955-3995.

MPH/MBA
The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (JHSPH) and the Johns Hopkins University Carey Business School offer a combined Master of Public Health and Master of Business Administration degree.  The required coursework of this unique 18-month, full-time program of study will enable students to integrate the philosophies, functions, and competencies of the seemingly disparate fields of public health and business.  Students in this program will acquire knowledge and skills in the principles of population-based health as well as finance and management, which will enable them to be effective managers and leaders in health-related agencies and organizations.  Graduates will be able to assess the public health needs of a defined population; develop, analyze, and implement targeted health policies and programs; lead the process of change within one's own organization and community; manage health care organizations to achieve identified goals; and communicate messages to targeted audiences.  Click here for a list of frequently asked questions regarding the MPH/MBA combined program.

Applications for the combined degree program must be obtained from and submitted to the School of Public Health and will be reviewed by the admissions committees of both Schools.  Click here for the electronic application to apply to the program.

MPH/MSN
The Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health offer a combined Master of Public Health/Master of Science in Nursing degree program.  The 18-month program of full-time study is designed specifically for nurses seeking to link their clinical and managerial interests with public health to improve delivery of nursing services in various settings. Two-thirds of the program consists of core courses in nursing and public health; the remaining elective courses allow students to pursue individualized concentrations.

Applications for the dual degree program must be obtained from and submitted to the School of Nursing, and will be reviewed by the admissions committees of both the School of Nursing and the School of Public Health.  The final admission decision is made by the steering committee for the combined program.  For more information and an application, contact the Office of Admissions and Student Services, The Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, 525 N. Wolfe Street, Baltimore, MD, 21205, (410) 955-7548.

MPH/MSW
The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the University of Maryland School of Social Work (UMSSW) offer a combined MPH/MSW program that provides students with the knowledge and skills that will enable them to be effective practitioners and leaders in health-related agencies and settings.  Students obtain a population-based perspective and expertise in the quantitative sciences that, when combined with training in social work, prepare them to be effective members of the social work community with the ability to plan, implement and evaluate programs.

During the program students complete all required MSW course work in a specified area of concentration, as well as the core MPH requirements and a customized public health curriculum in the student's area of interest.  The University of Maryland grants students 6-9 academic credits for their public health work, and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health allows students up to 20 credits of special studies to pursue expertise in a combined public health and social work practicum.

The MPH/MSW program is designed for pursuit on a full-time basis.  Students normally complete one year of the MSW program at UMSSW and then spend eleven months (starting in July) completing the MPH program requirements, returning to UMSSW to complete the MSW program.  The MPH degree is awarded upon completion of the MSW degree.

The standard MPH admission prerequisite of previous health professional training or two years of health-related experience is waived for students who successfully complete the combined program.  All other prerequisites must be met.

Interested applicants must apply to each school separately and simultaneously, taking care to indicate the appropriate beginning year for the MPH program on the School's application form.  Official transcripts and GRE scores must be sent separately to each school, and recommendations must be provided separately using the appropriate forms.

Further information about the MSW program at the University of Maryland may be obtained by contacting the Office of the Associate Dean for Admissions at (410) 706-8044.

MPH/RD Internship

The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (JHSPH), in cooperation with the dietetic internship program at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center (JHBMC), offers students the opportunity to earn both the MPH degree and RD credential.  The 10-month internship program followed by completion of the 11-month MPH degree provides a unique training opportunity in both clinical dietetics and public health nutrition.  Students must apply to and be accepted into both programs.

For information on applying to the MPH Program online, click here.

For information on the Dietetic Internship application process, click here.

It is anticipated that students will complete the internship first and that this year will count towards the 2-year health-related experience admission criterion for the MPH Program.  In the Internship program, students complete clinical rotations in the Baltimore Regional Burn Center, Johns Hopkins Weight Management Center; General Clinical Research Center (GCRC); Johns Hopkins Children's Center, and complete community nutrition rotations with the USDA, the WIC program, and the Maryland State Health Department.  During their MPH year, students can either choose the public health nutrition concentration, some other concentration, or customize with the MPH Program.  It is envisioned that students would engage in an MPH capstone experience related to prevention programs based on their clinical experiences and interests (e.g., obesity or diabetes prevention, food security or humanitarian assistance; research methods and clinical epidemiology.)
