Online Module: Chemical Exposure and Health Effects

What we know and what we don’t know from epidemiology research

Judy S. LaKind, MS, PhD

President of LaKind Associates, LLC
Adjunct Associate Professor, Department of Epidemiology and Public Health
University of Maryland School of Medicine

This one hour module will define chemical exposures and health outcomes and provide background on environmental epidemiology and health care provider interests. There is a clear need to evaluate the quality of exposure data and to use carefully conducted systematic reviews to provide a more informed interpretation of studies on exposure-health outcome associations.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain why not all exposure information is created equal.
  • Evaluate quality of exposure data in epidemiology studies.
  • Describe the importance of systematic reviews in evaluating associations between exposures to environmental chemicals and health outcomes.

Content Outline

  • Definitions and overarching concepts
  • Background
  • How do scientists assess human exposures to environmental chemicals?
  • How can we evaluate the quality of exposure data?
  • What is a systematic review and how does this inform interpretation of studies?
  • Answering questions about environmental chemical exposures and risks
