Implementation

Data on parent and teacher implementation/participation in the CC and FSP interventions is available for grade 1. The monitoring of fidelity of implementation for the CC intervention involved three parts: (1) measures of setting up the classroom; (2) classroom observation sessions; and (3) classroom visit record reviews.   For example, in assessing the critical

thinking component, Critique of the Week, the intervention team member would first assess whether the teacher had the manual and guide available in the classroom, displayed a Critique of the Week bulletin board and the Thinking Strategies map, had readiness lessons and extender activities available (measures of setting up the classroom). Second, classroom observations were then made to determine the whether the teacher implemented the lesson plan as designed (classroom observation sessions). Finally, the teacher's lesson plans and the monthly Critique of the Week forms completed by students would be reviewed (classroom record reviews).

In terms of methods and measures of implementation and participation for the FSP intervention, intervenors were required to provide documentation of each contact with parents, including, where appropriate, summaries of what transpires, any unique features, duration of the contacts, parent or child attendance, and level of participation and compliance with "homework

assignments". Parents involved in the FSP intervention anonymously reported on their implementation and the usefulness of the techniques taught, and were also asked to report on the family intervenors' interpersonal and teaching skills. The weekly parent comment sheets sent home with each of the Fun Math and Read Aloud activities served as indicators of parent participation in the weekly learning activities. Live and audio taped observations of parent workshops were made to determine the extent to which the intervention protocols were being adhered to and well administered.
