Center Director, Andrea C. Gielen, at the kick-off of the Be Alert, Don’t Get Hurt pedestrian safety campaign
One of the greatest ongoing challenges in the field of injury prevention is closing the gap between discoveries about effective solutions and translating and disseminating these discoveries for use by practitioners and policymakers.
A critically important opportunity to reduce the burden of injury lies in the translation of research into programs and policies that make a difference in people’s lives. Our Outreach work is center stage for this effort.

Our Resource Library
Our Resource Library offers a compendium of the Center’s evidence-based materials on effective injury prevention practices and policies in the areas of general injury prevention, home safety, substance use and overdose, transportation safety and violence.
Our Outreach work bridges this gap. The Center’s robust experience and strong reputation in the areas of outreach, research translation and dissemination form the foundation for this work, which includes:
- Expert guidance to the media, policymakers, advocates, practitioners, health care providers and the public
- Partnerships and collaborations to inform our research and to translate research into practice
- Training for health professionals in the practice of injury prevention
- Technical assistance to agencies and organizations seeking to implement injury prevention solutions
Translating Research Into Policy and Practice
Translating scientific research into effective programs and policies is a central strategy to reduce the burden of injury. Without strategic guidance to translate and disseminate evidence-based solutions, practitioners and policymakers are left with good intentions that too often fall short. Decision makers need access to the available evidence to maximize the positive impact of their injury prevention efforts.
Through Outreach activities, we advance our Center’s vision of a society that is safe, where all people are free from the burden of life-altering injuries.
