The Johns Hopkins Meatless Monday Project

MMThe Johns Hopkins Meatless Monday Project provides technical assistance and scientific expertise to the national Meatless Monday campaign. The Project involves a range of activities that are in line with the campaign’s goals and the Center for a Livable Future’s mission, including: conducting research and evaluation activities that inform the national campaign, communicating scientific expertise and information to a variety of specific audiences, developing and implementing education initiatives that engage public health communities, etc.

Meatless Monday is a non-profit initiative of The Monday Campaigns that began in 2003 in association with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. In 2000, the Surgeon General released the Healthy People 2010 report outlining health objectives for the nation to serve as goals for the next decade. Healthy People 2010 specifically called for a 15% reduction in saturated fat in the American diet. Since saturated fat in the diet is almost exclusively of animal origin and one day of the week is just under 15% of the week, the campaign began by encouraging people to refrain from eating meat one day a week to help reach this goal.

Meatless Monday on the Hopkins’ Campuses
Each Monday, the Johns Hopkins Hospital’s Cobblestone Café highlights vegetarian meal options at its Wellness Corner to promote the benefits of eating more fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Read about the launch of the campaign: “The Johns Hopkins Hospital Launches Meatless Monday

Sodexo’s Meatless Monday Initiative
A global food service and facilities management company that serves more than 9 million meals a day in North America alone, Sodexo launched a Meatless Monday initiative starting in January 2011 with its more than 2,000 corporate accounts and more than 900 health care facilities across the country. With the help of researchers at the Center, Sodexo designed and distributed surveys to general managers at all of their food service accounts to assess the success of the new initiative. According to survey results, Sodexo’s Meatless Monday initiative has helped participating facilities serve healthier, more sustainable menu options while maintaining sales and increasing customer satisfaction. Baltimore Franciscan Center – Food with Dignity
With the support from and in collaboration with the Center’s Food and Faith Project, we have helped the Baltimore Franciscan Center promote the concept of food and dignity by ensuring the homeless and disenfranchised receive fresh and local meatless meals at least once a week at the Baltimore Franciscan Center.

Baltimore City Schools
The Center has recognized the Baltimore City Public Schools for its efforts to help improve the health and wellbeing of students and their families through education and access to healthy local foods.  In 2009, Baltimore City schools became the first citywide school system to launch Meatless Mondays in school cafeterias. 

The Center also is a supporter of the Baltimore City Public Schools’ Great Kids Farm. It provides opportunities for Baltimore City school students to understand and participate in every aspect of food preparation— from seed to fork—and prepares them to lead 21st century sustainability efforts.
