The Institute for Health and Social Policy’s multidisciplinary work explores the relationship between social policy and public health and provides policymakers and practitioners with credible information to inform policy change.
Our emphasis on social policy stems from the widespread recognition that there are social determinants of health and wellbeing, including education, neighborhood conditions, financial security and socio-political climate. These determinants are strongly influenced by social policies such as those governing wages, labor markets, housing, energy, food and agriculture, and transportation—all of which can contribute to inequity.
Some of the nation’s greatest public health successes would not have been possible without policy change.”
—Keshia M. Pollack Porter, PhD, MPH, Institute director
