Welding Named Associate Director

Kevin Welding, PhD, has been named Associate Director of the Institute for Global Tobacco Control. An Assistant Scientist in the Department of Health, Behavior & Society, he has been with IGTC since 2015.

Welding will assist IGTC Director Joanna Cohen in the management and operations of all aspects of the Institute, focusing on strategic planning, hiring/staffing, and new funding opportunities. He will serve as the co-Director for our WHO Collaborating Centre work.

He received his PhD in Economics from University of California, Santa Barbara, his master's degree from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, and is also a graduate of Muhlenberg College.

Welding has represented IGTC at Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use meetings in Brazil, Philippines, Ukraine, Indonesia. He has presented illicit trade work in Mexico and Brazil and has represented IGTC at PAHO and WHO events and convenings. Welding has worked on projects related to illicit trade, tobacco packaging, health warning labels, tobacco control policy compliance, and consulted on numerous others.

Welding has played a part in our capacity building work by being on the application review committee for our Scholars and Certificate programs, as well as an instructor in the Certificate program. He has also recently been part of domestic work within the VAPER project, our arm of the VCU TCORS, and the TARGET project, part of the FDA funded CERSI work at Hopkins.
