Inaugural Kruse Awards Ceremony in Human Nutrition

Dedicated to the Kruse Family

The Center for Human Nutrition hosted the Inaugural Kruse Awards Ceremony and seminar in Human Nutrition on April 21, 2015, at which the first Kruse Alumni Research-to-Policy Award in Human Nutrition was presented to Dr. Mary “Molly” Edmonds Cogswell, a senior scientist at the CDC. The award was founded by Doug Kruse and his wife Betty Whelchel to recognize significant contributions in translating nutrition science into programs and policies to protect population health. The Kruse family also makes two other nutrition awards possible, that honor the work and memory of Doug’s father, Harry D Kruse. Harry, a protégé of EV McCullum, received his ScD from Hopkins in 1926 and became a distinguished member of the Department of Biochemistry. After leaving the University, he became the Executive Secretary of the NY Academy of Medicine where he published an impressive body of work.

The Harry D Kruse Fellowship was established in 1987 to support doctoral candidates in nutrition who display outstanding achievement and promise (Dr. Cogswell was its 1989 recipient). The Kruse Publication Award was created in 2010 and recognizes graduate students who have published a peer-reviewed paper addressing a topic in human nutrition prior to graduation.

Endowed George G. Graham Lecture in Infant and Child Nutrition

Presented by the Middendorf Foundation

Professor George G. Graham, MD, founding director of the Human Nutrition Division in the Department of International Health, was a leading expert in child nutrition whose discoveries continue to guide infant and child feeding practices. Family and friends endowed the School's first chair in human nutrition in his name in 2005, and in 2008 the Middendorf Foundation provided the Department's first endowed lectureship, in Dr. Graham's name, to highlight child and maternal nutrition issues of public health importance.
