Health Care Access & Coverage -- Health Equity - 2021

Title:   "Drug Pricing:  Policy and Politics"

September 27, 2021 / Virtual Event

Despite bipartisan agreement that the high cost of drugs must be addressed, proposals to reform the U.S. drug pricing system have languished for years.  There’s no shortage of ideas on what to do — Medicare price negotiation, greater price transparency, international reference pricing, patent exclusivity changes, and price controls all have their advocates.  But there’s no consensus on how to strike the right balance between making drugs affordable now, and preserving financial incentives for developing new drugs in the future.  Our expert panel discussed the policy options for drug pricing, the appropriate roles of government and markets, and prospects for reform in the current political environment.

Speakers:  Benedic N. Ippolito, PhD; Rachel Sachs, JD, MPH; Mariana Socal, MD, PhD; Rachel M. Werner, MD, PhD (Moderator)

October 28, 2020

As part of the election series, Stephanie Desmon talks with Dr. Gerard Anderson, an expert in health policy at Johns Hopkins.  They discuss what the election could mean for the coverage of pre-existing conditions, Medicaid expansion, and drug pricing.  They also talk about a Supreme Court hearing in November that may determine the future of the Affordable Care Act, the similarities and differences between the candidates’ views of the ACA, and a fact check on whether insulin really is as cheap as water.
