Committees

Student Assembly Standing Committees

 

Communications and External Affairs Committee

  • Update and manage the Student Assembly website
  • Manage the activities on the listserv which communicates events to students
  • Handles public relations & alumni relations
  • Fosters a collaborative environment to promote student engagement platforms

Diversity, Equity, & Community Affairs Committee

  • Collaborates with SOURCE to perform projects that give back to the community (e.g. food drives)
  • Distribute the Community Affairs Grant (awarded once per term to a student group wishing to give back to the community)
  • Works with Assistant Dean Joel Bolling and the school-wide IDARE Committee on formulating and implementing the IDARE strategic plan.

Elections Committee

  • Organize and coordinate the bi-annual spring and fall elections
  • Serve as presidents of the MPH class and ensure a smooth line of communication between Student Assembly and all MPH students

Finance & Appropriations Committee

  • Review funding applications for student events from recognized student groups and approves funds as appropriate
  • Oversee and manage the Student Assembly budget
  • Liaise between finance department and student groups for approved reimbursements

Professional Development & Academic Honors Committee

  • Raises money through auctions to award students financially to support attending a conference of their choosing
  • Work with the professional development office to provide avenues for students to improve their professional presence
  • Recognize and award students, faculty, and staff annually for their exemplary work

Quality of Life Committee

  • Identify & support priorities for students' emotional, physical, and financial improvement and well-being
  • Host fun events where students can learn more about all of the above areas

Social & Cultural Affairs Committee

  • Plans, organizes, and celebrates various social and cultural events for all students at the school (e.g. cultural night)
  • Previous events have included a formal event, a faculty-student variety show, a welcome party, & an end of year party.

Student Groups Committee

  • Liaise with student groups and the Student Assembly about various issues
  • Educate student groups about rules and regulations for planning an event
  • Work with new and potential student groups to learn the processes for starting a new student group
  • Coordinate and communicate with all student groups about relevant deadlines, and upcoming events

 

Student Assembly Ad hoc Committees

 

Doctoral Student Council (DSC)

  • The DSC is an ad hoc committee of the JHSPH Student Assembly
  • The DSC has representatives from all 10 Departments of JHSPH and the School-wide DrPH program
  • The DSC advocates for doctoral students (PhD, DrPH, ScD) at the School and University Levels, with special attention to
    • Transparency of academic requirements
    • TA compensation and working conditions
    • Student Benefits
    • Funding and Tuition
  • The DSC also seeks to provide a platform for sharing best practices across departments
  • Students may reach out to DSC representatives from their department to seek help addressing issues that affect doctoral students
  • Elections for new DSC representatives are held in each department in April-May of each academic year
