Schoolwide Opportunities

Public health students can gain insight about how their courses in public health impact their careers outside academia. The Practice Office offers funded and non-paid opportunities to support training in practice settings.

Non-paid, for-credit Opportunities

PHASE Internship course - offers opportunities for public health graduate students to apply academic knowledge and theory in real-world professional practice settings. Placements are with local and state health departments in Maryland.

Eligibility: JHSPH masters and doctoral students.

Baltimore Community Practicum course – is a field experience that allows public health graduate students to apply public health skills "at the elbow" of experienced public health practitioners. Placements are with local public health agencies, community-based organizations, and health departments.

Eligibility: JHSPH masters and doctoral students.

MPH Practicum Courses - courses with real-world practice components, connecting students to outside organizations and agencies.

Eligibility: JHSPH masters and doctoral students.

Practice Certificate – provides formal education and training in public health principles, problem solving skills, quantitative methods, social and behavioral determinants of disease, organization and management of health programs, and preparation for new and emerging threats to the health of the public.

Eligibility: Open to anyone who is not matriculated in a JHSPH degree program.

Special Studies – to gain more experience in applying public health knowledge, students can seek their own internship opportunities as special studies/independent projects under the direction of a faculty advisor and earn academic credit.

Eligibility: JHSPH masters and doctoral students.


MPH Practicum Awards - recognizes MPH students for their outstanding public health practice contributions through their practicum experiences with community organizations and public health agencies.

Eligibility: JHSPH MPH students.
