Changing Mental Health Care for Children

wissowLawrence Wissow, MD, MPH ‘84, is professor of Health, Behavior, and Society in the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, with joint appointments in Pediatrics and Psychiatry in the School of Medicine. He is “triple boarded” in pediatrics, adult and child psychiatry. Initially a faculty member in the Division of General Pediatrics and physician director of the multi-disciplinary child abuse team, he has worked for 10 years as a co-located child psychiatrist in a “medical home” clinic providing primary care to children and adolescents with HIV. For 10 years, he was an attending psychiatrist in the Community Psychiatry Hispanic Clinic, where he provided care to recent immigrants from Latin America and Francophone Africa. He is chair of a task force, jointly sponsored by Maryland chapters of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP), developing plans for pediatric-child psychiatric collaboration in primary care.  His research centers on patient-doctor communication in pediatric primary care, with a focus on the disclosure and discussion of sensitive psychosocial issues. He was principal investigator of a trial of mental health communication skills training for primary care pediatricians.

Dr. Wissow’s research is focused on provider-patient interaction as a mental health intervention. Students of all levels are welcome to work with him—what often matters most is having sufficient time to be involved with projects. Some opportunities for interested students are working with existing data sets from past studies and putting together review papers.
