SOURCE Volunteer Week Celebrates Community Engagement in Baltimore

Published

SOURCE Volunteer Week

Every year, SOURCE celebrates the many students, faculty and staff who engage in volunteer and community engagement work in Baltimore communities. The weeklong series of events is intended to raise awareness of the service, research, practicum and field placements conducted in partnership with Baltimore City nonprofit organizations.

SOURCE volunteers

Founded in 2005, SOURCE serves as a tri-school bridge between students, faculty and staff of the Johns Hopkins University Schools of Public Health, Nursing and Medicine and a network of over 100 community and nonprofit organizations in Baltimore.

SOURCE activities include a Service-Learning Faculty and Community Fellows program, in which faculty and community leaders are trained in integrating service-learning pedagogy into academic coursework. Students who participate in these service-learning courses provide community service in response to community-identified concerns and engage in “critical reflection around power, privilege and ethics in the health fields.”

This year’s Volunteer Week events include a photo contest, toiletry drive, poster competition, and seminars and celebrations showcasing the work of faculty, staff and students in Baltimore communities.

The celebration culminates in SOURCE’s Spring Tri-School Day of Service on Saturday, April 28, with open opportunities for all faculty, staff and students to spend a few hours volunteering on a number of projects.

“There’s an interconnectedness between social justice and public health. We are a global institution, but we still have an obligation to be good neighbors. SOURCE serves as that vital connection between our School and Baltimore communities.” —Dean Ellen J. MacKenzie, PhD ’79, MSc ’75
