A Safer, Healthier & Empowered Future with Family Planning

Helping countries break the cycle of poverty, make families healthier and empower people to shape their own lives—through access to contraception.

Partners from around the world—including the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health—are gathering at the Family Planning Summit in London, UK on July 11 to ensure that more people in the world’s poorest countries are able to plan their families and their futures, all with the goal of enabling 120 million more women and girls to use contraceptives by 2020.

This ambitious goal, called the Family Planning 2020 goal, was first set in 2012 through a series of individual, country-led commitments. Now at a midpoint, policymakers, donors, researchers, and advocates are evaluating lessons learned, investing in proven solutions and taking collective action to accelerate progress.

Established in 1999, the School’s Bill & Melinda Gates Institute for Population and Reproductive Health has long been a center of excellence in the field of family planning. With the advent of the Family Planning 2020 movement, the Gates Institute, along with a strong community of partners, has worked closely with developing country governments to help them achieve their commitments.
