Advice from students of “salud pública” in Barcelona

Published

Public health issues span continents, countries and borders. So there is a lot to learn from traveling, working and studying with public health professionals from around the world. Every year, the Fall Institutes in Barcelona provide students with this very opportunity.

During this past year’s Fall Institutes, Professor Tom Burke spoke with several participants about the public health challenges in their home countries, their visions for the future and also their words of advice for students new to the field.

“You cannot forget that you are a public servant.”

“We have to work within a political system.”

“Many things influence public health – economics, tourism – you have to take everything into account.”

Listen to the Public Health on the Inside podcast for the full responses and even more advice from current students.

The Johns Hopkins Fall Institutes in Barcelona provide an opportunity to take short-term, intensive public health courses in a variety of subject areas. Many students take advantage of these institutes to kick off a part-time MPH degree program, a flexible degree option for public health professionals.

The deadline for applying to the 2012 Fall Institutes in Barcelona is August 1, 2012. For more information, you can contact the MPH Program Office at 410-955-1291 or mphprog@jhsph.edu.
