Earlier today I sent you a note about the earthquake in Nepal. Now I am writing about a tragedy closer to home. As we all know, Freddie Gray was buried this morning. His death has ignited our community. As someone who was alive during the racial unrest of the ‘60’s, Saturday night brought back so many painful memories. I had hoped, and do believe, that we have moved forward as a society but clearly we still have a long way to go.
Tomorrow is the first JHU Forum on Race in America—see below. I encourage our community to participate. I will also work with our faculty, staff and students to best determine how our School brings our resources to bear to support peaceful resolution and, long term, to solve the challenges that we face.
These are difficult times, for sure, so it is even more important that we pull together as a community.
