DoVE Return on Investment (ROI) Publication Launch

The Decade of Vaccine Economics (DoVE) Project, carried out by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health’s International Vaccine Access Center (IVAC) for nearly ten years, has computed the return-on-investment for vaccines preventing 10 infectious diseases in 73 countries that have received support from Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.

In August 2020, the results of DoVE were released and also published on Health Affairs. Some of the key study findings include:

  • Between 2021 and 2030, vaccine programs in 73 low- and middle- income countries will prevent over $782 billion in costs associated with diseases.
  • Return on investment in vaccine programs is estimated to be US$54 per $1 spent when considering value individuals place on their health.
  • Using a Cost of Illness approach, the estimated net benefit would be about 20 times the cost of vaccine programs.

Two ways to show vaccines are a smart investment

DoVE compared the costs of providing vaccines against 10 diseases to the economic benefits of vaccines in 73 low- and middle-income countries from 2021–2030.

Using a Cost of Illness approach, the estimated net benefit would be about 20 times the cost of vaccine programs. Using a Value of a Statistical Life approach, the net-benefit versus cost ratio for the same decade would be more than 50 to 1. By comparison, publicly-traded American companies in the S&P 500 have returned an average of $2.16 for every $1 invested after 10 years.

Check out this short video explaining how DoVE determined the return on investment of vaccine programs by comparing the costs to economic benefits.
