Primary Health Care Assessment

Summary

A situation analysis of the extent to which the primary health care system in Bihar, India – both the state-run system and the care provided by traditional healers, independent practitioners, and NGOs – addresses population health needs. A series of surveys will be employed to make a cross-sectional comparison of households, health care providers, primary care facilities, and patient consultations at said facilities. Key research objectives are (1) to identify the type of primary care providers first contacted by patients seeking ambulatory care in rural Bihar, (2) to estimate the level of structural and clinical quality of care among public and private primary care providers in Bihar, and (3) to understand the drivers of patient choice of primary care provider and its determinants.
