Identifying barriers to retention in ART and prevention of mother to child transmission in Mozambique

Summary

This study aims to inform development of a locally-informed and relevant intervention to increase postpartum adherence to antiretroviral treatment for HIV and mother to child transmission of HIV based on evidence and local perspectives about barriers and opportunities.

We aim to: 1. Describe key clinical, testing-related and health system factors associated with maternal to child transmission of HIV (MTCT) across Mozambique with a focus on Nampula Province. 2. Explore perceptions about barriers to retention in HIV care in pregnancy and after delivery in Nampula and nation-wide, as well as possible interventions. 3. Estimate MTCT and number of new pediatric infections under various retention scenarios developed based on results of the other two aims (factors associated with MTCT and perceptions about and barriers to retention).
