End Stage Renal Disease Among HIV-Infected Adults in North America

Summary

HIV-infected individuals have benefited from improved viral suppression, but a discrepancy in ESRD risk between black and nonblack HIV-infected persons remains, the result in part of continued disparities in antiretroviral use and viral suppression, and higher rates of comorbidities. This study has characterized risk factors for ESRD among HIV-infected individuals in care in a first publication and now is assessing the role of antiretroviral therapies on ESRD risk as well as evaluating clincal care practices with respect to known nephrotoxic antiretroviral medication use that may be contraindicated by kidney function biomarker levels.
