ALIVE - AIDS Linked to the IntraVenous Experience

Summary

In 1988, the ALIVE study recruited ~3000 Baltimore injection drug users (IDUs) into a prospective cohort with semiannual follow-up visits to gather clinical, behavioral and laboratory data. By following both HIV infected and uninfected, at-risk IDUs, we have helped characterize the natural history of HIV infection and identified risk factors for incident HIV. On-going follow-up and additional recruitments allow us to continue broad-based, collaborative research on the sociobehavioral, pathogenesis and clinical aspects of HIV infection and drug use.
