Assessing the contribution of fortified sugar to vitamin A intakes and status in Zambia

Mkushi, Zambia

Summary

Zambia was the first country in Sub-Saharan Africa to implement industrial-scale food fortification. Although a program to fortify sugar with vitamin A has been in place since 1998, monitoring has been quite limited and cross-sectional population surveys have not revealed any decline in the prevalence of vitamin A deficiency. In this study, we are measuring the vitamin A content of sugar available in households and markets in rural Zambia. Those measurements are then being used to inform modeling of vitamin A intakes among reproductive-aged women.
