South Africa: HIV and AIDS Treatment and Related Services in Support of PEPFAR
In January of 2008, USAID awarded Jhpiego a cooperative agreement of $19,272,000 over five years to implement HIV and AIDS Treatment and Related Services in Support of PEPFAR in South Africa. Jhpiego and the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing are partners on this program. This ground breaking program will expand access to high-quality services at the community level by empowering nurses to provide advance care, including antiretroviral therapy (ART).
For the program, Jhpiego will lead efforts to:
-- strengthen nurse initiated and day-to-day management of patients on ART;
-- build the accreditation capacity of national, provincial, district and subdistrict department health teams for ART sites;
-- build the capacity of provincial and district teams to conduct ongoing quality assurance for ART services using the SBM-R approach;
-- strengthen PMTCT activities at selected sites already targeted for implementation of nurse-initiated and managed ART; and
-- assess current male circumcision capacity.
About Jhpiego: For nearly 40 years, Jhpiego, (pronounced "ja-pie-go"), has empowered front-line health workers by designing and implementing simple, low-cost, hands-on solutions that strengthen the delivery of health care services, following the household-to-hospital continuum of care. We partner with community- to national-level organizations to build sustainable, local capacity through advocacy, policy and guidelines development, and quality and performance improvement approaches.
