Novel TB Preventive Regimens for HIV-Infected Adults in Soweto, South Africa

Soweto, South Africa

Summary

This is a four-arm study of alternative preventive therapy regimens for latent TB in HIV-infected adults. The study will provide critically important information on the most effective therapies to prevent HIV-related TB, and will assess the potency of short course regimens containing rifamycins, as well as life-long therapy with isoniazid. The study has completed enrollment of 1148 patients and is now in the follow-up phase. The preliminary estimate of the 3-year TB incidence for all study arms is 15.8%, even though all are actively treated. Follow-up in the study will continue for another 2 years, and the trial will be completed in 2008.
