Karachi Invasive Pneumococcal Disease Surveillance Project

Karachi, Pakistan

Summary

The objective is to define the incidence of pneumonia, meningitis and sepsis, in children under 3 years of age residing in urban Karachi, to estimate the proportion of these infections that might be prevented by pneumococcal conjugate vaccines, and to improve the timeliness of immunizations. These preparations are in anticipation of intervention studies with vaccine. We have established community based studies that would define the incidence of invasive disease caused by S. pneumoniae. Children are enrolled at the first vaccination visit and followed longitudinally, provide them with immunizations in a timely manner through the government EPI program, actively follow them up to capture study outcomes, including pneumonia, sepsis, meningitis, and hospitalizations using electronic tracking and data capture systems.
