Feasibility of measuring HIV-related mortality during surveys in African countries
Karonga, Malawi
Summary
In African countries affected by generalized HIV epidemics, data on causes of death are often only available for small and highly selected populations. We will address this limitation by testing whether adding a few concise questions to mortality questionnaires currently in use in representative population-based surveys (e.g., the demographic and health surveys) would yield accurate estimates of the excess mortality faced by persons living with HIV. If effective, this enhanced questionnaire will improve the evaluation of HIV prevention and treatment programs, and will permit measuring progress towards an AIDS-free generation.
