Effectiveness of Zinc in the Treatment of Diarrhea

Bamako, Mali

Summary

In 2004, WHO and UNICEF issued a joint statement recommending zinc for the treatment of acute diarrhea along with oral rehydration therapy. In support of the implementation of this recommendation, the introduction of this intervention is being initiated in 3 countries: Mali, India and Pakistan. These studies are now entering the third and final phase, in which zinc therapy for diarrhea will be introduced on a medium-to-large scale via health workers, including those based in communities, social marketing and other approaches, beginning in March 2005.
