India: Strengthening Maternal and Newborn Health Care in Mumbai
Jhpiego is working to strengthen maternal and newborn care in Maharashtra state through an award of $250,000 from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. Through this support, Jhpiego is piloting an intervention to improve the quality of intrapartum and immediate postpartum care at 14 maternity homes in Mumbai. By developing simplified standards and tools to operationalize existing policies, providers will be given a step-by-step “roadmap” on how to adhere to these standards and improve the quality of care for mothers and newborns. Jhpiego aims to translate the Government of India’s (GoI’s) existing guidelines into actual practice—with the ultimate goal of encouraging the Government of Maharashtra, other state governments and the GoI to expand this model nationwide.
For nearly 40 years, Jhpiego, (pronounced "ja-pie-go"), has empowered front-line health workers by designing and implementing simple, low-cost, hands-on solutions that strengthen the delivery of health care services, following the household-to-hospital continuum of care. We partner with community- to national-level organizations to build sustainable, local capacity through advocacy, policy and guidelines development, and quality and performance improvement approaches.
