Measuring SHS exposure in support of policy development and implementation in Asia

Ahmedabad, India

Summary

In 2010, the Institute for Global Tobacco Control in association with WHO Regional Offices for the Western Pacific and Southeast Asia collaborated with eight countries (Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Republic of Korea, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam) to conduct a cross-country study measuring SHS exposure in selected public places such as government offices, hospitals, hotels, restaurants and bars and schools in selected cities. Air nicotine and particulate matter (PM2.5) were measured in key locations in each place. In conjunction with the collection and analysis of the data, a dissemination strategy was developed and implemented to distribute messages to media outlets and others to generate attention on the need for strong smoke-free legislation.
