Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS)
One major barrier to ending preventable child deaths is a more complete understanding of the cause of these deaths. Current understanding of the etiology of child mortality relies heavily upon verbal autopsy studies, which provides little in terms of underlying causes of death. CHAMPS aims to generate population-based cause of child mortality data in some of the highest burden settings in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. The CHAMPS site in Bangladesh is Baliakandi, where demographic surveillance, community engagement, and minimally invasive tissue sampling approaches are major components of our study. Data on cause of death will be made available in near real-time to policy makers and communities to inform public health programming.
