Preventing emergence and spillover of bat viruses in high-risk global hotspots
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) of the US government has launched a program called Preventing Emerging Pathogenic Threats (PREEMPT) to attempt to predict and contain viral mutations that could lead to cross-species transmisson of pathogens from wildlife to humans. The goal of this study is to understand the drivers of shedding and spillover events of henipaviruses from bats across Australia, Bangladesh, and multiple sites in Africa. I am leading the work in Bangladesh.
