Overview
Co-founded, with Drs. David Serwadda and Nelson Sewankambo, the Rakai Health Sciences Program (RHSP), Rakai District, Uganda. Since 1988, the RHSP has conducted population-based cohort studies on HIV and related infections including malaria, HPV, HSV-2, BV and other STIs; behavioral risk factors; HIV/STI individual and community -randomized prevention trials; operations research on HIV and reproductive health service provision; molecular epidemiology of HIV, effects of HIV subtypes, and HIV superinfection; HIV/STI care and treatment; and social, familial and demographic consequences of HIV. Trials have included STI control for HIV prevention, STI control during pregnancy for the prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission, male circumcision for HIV prevention in men and male circumcision in HIV+ men for the prevention of HIV/STI transmission to women. Current interests also include the role of mucosal immunity and the genital biome in resistance/susceptibility to HIV infection.
