Dr. Matanoski has been with Johns Hopkins for over 55 years receiving her MD from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 1955. She received her MPH in 1962 and her DrPH in 1964 from the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health. Dr. Matanoski has been a leader in the field of epidemiology at Johns Hopkins and worldwide. Her principle interests are in occupational and environmental disease prevention. She is a certified specialist in general preventive medicine since 1973. She has served as a member and/or chair of numerous national and international committees for EPA, NIEHS, the VA, DOE, and IARC.  She chaired several scientific advisory committees for EPA which set regulations as well as policy for the Agency and was chair of the Science Advisory Board for five years.  She recently managed two state cancer registries and in that capacity helped advise the organizations about policies for cancer prevention and the need for attention to disparities in cancer occurrence.  Her research has included studies of numerous industries such as rubber production, pulp and paper production, industrial painting, phosphate mining and others as well as exposures to various agents such as arsenic, dioxin, butadiene, styrene, air pollutants and electromagnetic fields.  Her current research is directed at determining risks from radiation exposure in a large population of shippyard workers.
