Overview
Lauren E. Allen, DrPH ‘21, MA is a Research Associate at the Bloomberg School of Public Health, Department of Health Policy & Management. She is a public health practitioner in the research administration setting. She currently serves as the Director of Operations for the Major Extremity Trauma Research Consortium (METRC), a large multicenter clinical trials consortium in orthopaedic trauma. Dr. Allen’s expertise is in the domains of policy setting and implementation; management of multi-institutional research; and knowledge dissemination. She is a thought leader and the architect of METRC’s robust infrastructure. The consortium has supported more than 35 multicenter trials in a network of more than 80 trauma centers throughout the United States and Canada. She also provides overall direction for the METRC project which develops Clinical Practice Guidelines and Appropriate Use Criteria for topics of relevance to METRC's research agenda and which incorporate evidence produced by published METRC trials.

As an extension of her METRC work and role, Dr. Allen is also a co-investigator on a large, complex, two phased pragmatic multicenter study of non-opioid treatments for knee osteoarthritis pain- the SKOAP Study. This project is funded by the NIH’s Helping End Addition Long Term (HEAL) Initiative, the largest federal investment in the opioid crisis. Dr. Allen has adapted many of METRC’s programs for the SKOAP Consortium and integrated the METRC management approach with that of the NIH-NCAT’s Trial Innovation Network (TIN), a group of nationwide centers of excellence with expertise in specific components of clinical trial management and implementation.
