Overview

My current research focuses on the epidemiology of substance use, abuse and dependence, as well as on environmental, psychiatric  and individual factors associated with substance use disorders in the US general population, with a particular focus on adolescents, young adults, and minorities. I am also interested in childhood risk factors for problem and pathological gambling. I am a faculty member of the Drug Dependence Epidemiology group at the Department of Mental Health (DMH) and I work closely with researchers from several disciplines including epidemiology, public health, mental health, psychiatry, psychology, addiction psychiatry, substance abuse health economics, statistics and survey methodology. My research includes NIDA-NIH funded studies to investigate trends in nonmedical prescription opioid use and opioid use disorder in the U.S. populations well as their association with psychiatric disorders and the investigation of factors associated with nonmedical prescription drug use, abuse and dependence among adolescents in the U.S. I am also a Co-Investigator in a NIDA-NIH funded study to evaluate the economic aspects of ecstasy use in the general population. In a separate line of research, I am a PI on a NICHD-NIH funded study to investigate childhood predictors of young adult gambling and gambling problems in African-Americans in Baltimore, using data collected in the JHU-PRC Cohort 3 study. See:http://magazine.jhsph.edu/2011/fall/news_briefs/

I have applied Biostatistics methods (such as Survival Analysis- Cox proportional hazard models with time-dependent covariates, Generalized Estimating Equations, Latent Class Analysis and Growth Mixture models) to address my research interests. Besides working with my Hopkins colleagues I also collaborate with researchers from other institutions such as Michigan State University, Columbia University, University of São Paulo, Brazil and Federal University of São Paulo, Brazil.
