Overview
Sydney Dy, MD, MS, FAAHPM is a Professor of Health Policy and Management, Medicine and Oncology, focusing in quality of care, safety, and decision-making research, particularly in patients with cancer and serious and terminal illness. She conducts quality measurement development, testing and implementation, particularly in palliative care, patient safety and primary care. Her research includes systematic literature reviews, primary qualitative and quantitative data collection, analyses of secondary databases, and quality and safety measurement and improvement.
Dr. Dy helped develop and lead many of the first palliative care programs at Johns Hopkins for over 15 years and served as Medical Director for Hopkins' cancer symptom clinic, palliative care case management and hospice programs for many years. Dr. Dy now practices with the Primary Care for Cancer Survivors Program and palliative care at Johns Hopkins Green Spring.
Current projects include:
Quality and safety:
- Outpatient palliative care patient experience quality indicators
- Evaluating the new Primary Care First model, particularly the Serious Illness Populations component
Palliative and end-of-life care::
- Improving family-centered advance care planning in primary care, with a focus on dementia
- Educating oncology health care professionals on biopsychosocial approaches to cancer pain management with more judicious use of opioids
- Evaluating the Medicare Care Choices Model (expansion of hospice care beyond 6-month limit)
