Examines measures and indicators of nuptiality, fertility, mortality and migration, and migrant health issues. Provides skills in making population estimation and projection.
380.603.01 / 380.603.81 – Demographic Methods for Public Health (ME. Hughes) Prepares students to use demographic methods to address specific public health problems, identify and estimate populations at risk, and aid in forecasting health service needs, using a combination of lectures, labs, and case studies. Methods covered include population projections and period life tables.
380.650.01 – Fundamentals Of Life Tables (S. Helleringer) Participants learn to analyze population phenomena using demographic methods. Focuses on international comparisons of mortality trends, but students also study fertility and population growth changes. Presents training in life tables (including single, multiple-decrement and multi-state life tables), providing students an opportunity to explore the relations among functions in the life table and its applications to key population processes. Emphasizes the theoretical concepts underlying this methodology, as well as the practice of estimating demographically meaningful results. R is the common computing language in demography and statistics, and students develop essential computing and quantitative data manipulation skills. Course materials are presented interactively, allowing students to gain hands-on experience in manipulating the principal functions of a life table and become familiar with the type of research that can be based on them.

Liu) Covers six areas regarding population studies including: population composition, fertility, migration, population projections, an introduction to stable populations, and measures of population health. Draws examples from data from both developed and developing countries.
380.655.01 – Social and Economic Aspects of Human Fertility (W. Mosher) Analyzes the correlates of fertility levels in societies and childbearing among individuals and couples. Examines classical theories of fertility change at the societal level and contemporary critiques of these theories. Also examines the determinants of fertility at the individual level, with an emphasis on differences in the timing of first birth and total family size by social class and ethnicity in developed and developing countries.
380.712.01 – Methods in Analysis of Large Population Surveys (S. Ahmed) Introduces the practical aspects of design and analysis of large sample surveys. Covers statistical issues of complex surveys involving stratification and clustering, methods of handling missing data, weighting, sample size estimation and allocation, design-based analysis of frequency tables and multivariate methods for complex surveys. Emphasizes applied, rather than theoretical derivation.
380.750.01 – Migration and Health: Concepts, Rates, and Relationships (C. Robinson) Students review research on specific countries and population groups as well as international data to be able to identify key concepts, categories and trends in migration; to describe basic methods (and limitations) in measuring migration, to speculate on causation of patterns and rates, and to analyze some of the relationships between migration and health, including speculation on causation of patterns and rates of fertility, mortality and morbidity; gender and reproductive health; vulnerable populations (including victims of trafficking); migration policy and human rights.

Bishai) Introduces students to leading theories in economic development and in the macroeconomic determinants of the health of populations, communities, and individuals. Reviews both historical and current cases to answer the following questions: What is economic development? How does economic development occur? Which aspects of development improve and which aspects are detrimental to human health? Can policymakers plot more “hygienic” plans for economic development? Do investments in health and family planning cause economies to prosper? *Offered every other year
380.758.81 – Demographic Estimation For Developing Countries (M. Perez-Patron, K. Hill) Introduces students to defects or deficiencies often experienced in demographic data for developing countries, and how to quantify the magnitude of errors. Describes approaches to data adjustment, with emphasizing the underlying theory and modeling. Also describes unconventional or indirect methods for estimating basic demographic parameters from robust indicators. Heavily emphasizes practical applications and quantitative calculations.
380.765.81 – Preventing Infant Mortality and Promoting the Health of Women, Infants and Children (M. Matone) Focuses on the historical problems and interventions associated with infant mortality. Describes the scientific basis for infant mortality and analyzes causes and consequences in a population and development of a programmatic and policy approach.
380.767.01 – Couples and Reproductive Health (S. Becker) Reviews and discusses readings on couples and reproductive health such as: Definitions of couples and of reproductive health; sociological, anthropological and economic perspectives; fertility decision making; critiques of a couple approach from feminists and from those concerned primarily with less stable sexual partnerships for STD/AIDS prevention, and design of couple studies and service delivery interventions.
