Global Budgeting for Hospital Services: A Webcast Series

Session 1: The Maryland Experience

The first webcast in the series will feature the leaders of Maryland's unique global budgeting system: Donna Kinzer, Executive Director of the Health Services Cost Review Commission, Maryland's rate setting agency; and John Colmers, Chair of the Health Services Cost Review Commission and Senior Vice President for Health Care Transformation and Strategic Planning at Johns Hopkins Medicine.  They will explain how Maryland's system works and answer questions from webinar participants.  Future webcasts will cover the experience of hospitals in Maryland's global budget system, the role of community partners, and paths to global budgeting outside of Maryland. The webcast will be moderated by Dr. David Chin, Distinguished Scholar and Director of Executive Education at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

The second webcast in the series will feature a case study in global budgeting, Carroll Hospital Center, located in Westminster, Maryland.  Carroll Hospital Center, led by CEO Leslie Simmons, has been paid through a global budget across all payers for four years.  Joining CEO Simmons in the webcast will be Carmela Coyle, the President and CEO of the Maryland Hospital Association.   Future webcasts will cover the role of community partners and paths to global budgeting outside of Maryland.  The webcast will be moderated by Dr. David Chin, Distinguished Scholar and Director of Executive Education at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.


Session 3: Global Budgeting In Your Neighborhood

The third webcast in the series will feature health experts discussing global budgeting in communities across the country, even in the absence of a rate-setting system like Maryland's.  The featured participants will include health economist Dr. Darrell Gaskin of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Josh Sharfstein, MD Associate Dean of Public Health Practice and Training of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.  Future webcasts will cover the role of community partners and the CMS view on global budgeting.  This webcast will be live on November 24 at 12 noon to 1 pm EST at www.jhsph.edu/globalbudget. The webcast will be moderated by Dr. David Chin, Distinguished Scholar and Director of Executive Education at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
