In Memoriam: A Tribute to Alena Frey from the MHS 2021 Cohort

Published

Members of the HBS Master of Health Science (MHS) 2021 cohort honor the memory of their classmate, Alena Frey, in a new letter.

Alena Frey was an invaluable classmate and friend of the Master of Health Science (MHS) 2021 cohort. It is with heavy hearts that we celebrate her life and her enthusiasm for learning, which brought her to the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

A Florida native, Alena loved getting to know the city of Baltimore and never failed to be the life of the party. She often raved about her love for the cold weather (which offered an opportunity to wear scarves, coats, and boots) and always shared the best music recommendations.

She was a uniquely positive and caring person, and could instantly light up a room with her personality and sense of humor. Even when not feeling her best, Alena never complained – perhaps only mentioning she was tired – and instead, would ask you how you were doing. She never failed to cheer you up if you were down. She actively listened, preferring to focus on others rather than herself.

Her optimism was nothing short of inspiring, and her selflessness and unequivocal positivity constantly made everyone around her better. Alena took everything in strides, adapting and continuing gracefully with a smile on her face as the academic year progressed. Her strength and tenacity will undoubtedly continue to inspire us all.

Though she will not be with us at graduation in May of 2021, Alena will stand with us in spirit, and accompany each of us in our individual journeys as public health professionals.
