Alan Ross

Dr. Ross joined the Johns Hopkins Biostatistics faculty in 1964, a position he still held (as emeritus) at his passing in 2013. His research interests were in survey sampling with a specialty focus on model-based methods of sampling. Over his long career he served as chief biostatistical consultant to the Federal Aviation Administration Office of Aviation Medicine, advised the WHO International Collaborative Study of Medical Care Utilization, designed and analyzed population surveys from around the world including the national census of Afghanistan, worked to estimate immunization coverage of Maryland children, and studied the effectiveness of treatments for drug addiction, among myriad other accomplishments. He chaired the department from 1967 to 1981.
